Today we congratulate Geoff Hinton and John Hopfield on being awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics .

It is fantastic to see the recognition of pioneering work in AI and we are sure that this award will be good for all of us.

Mr. Geoff Hinton has long been known as the “ Godfather of Deep Learning ”, which later became the “ Godfather of AI ”, so he deserves all the recognition that comes with this prestigious award.

As Geoff Hinton recounted in the " Heroes of Deep Learning " interview he did years ago, his early work in developing the foundations of neural networks has been fundamental to the rise of deep learning and AI. He is many years past the implementation of Hopfield networks , and his work has also been influential, so he too deserves the ultimate recognition that comes with winning a Nobel Prize.

In addition, the day after announcing the physics prize, the Committee announced that it had awarded Demis Hassabis, John Jumper and David Baker the Nobel Prize in Chemistry phone number database philippines for their work on AlphaFold and protein design.

AlphaFold and AlphaFold 2, as well as the work of David Baker’s lab, are compelling applications of AI that have led to important advances in chemistry and biology, and this award is well deserved as well.

It is remarkable that the Nobel committees for physics and chemistry, which are made up of scientists from those fields, have decided to honour AI researchers with this year's prizes. This is a sign of our field's growing impact on society.

While it's nice to have AI researchers recognized by people outside of AI , we wonder if there's room for the AI community to choose more award recipients themselves.

The best known in computer science is the Turing Award , and the recipient is selected by a broad group of computer scientists, many of whom have a deep understanding of AI. Many AI conferences award prizes for the best papers, and applications of AI in other fields will continue to receive well-deserved recognition from leaders in those fields.

We should be optimistic and believe that this will allow AI researchers to win more Nobel Prizes; they will surely one day win the prizes for economics, literature, medicine and peace. However, this seems like a good time to see how AI professionals are innovating and being recognized for their advances.
